Jerangle Hotel and Homestead - Jerangle NSW
On the face of it, Jerangle is just another of those blink and you'll miss it villages. A trip out to Jerangle is well worth the effort, if only because of the historical buildings and breathtaking scenery on the way out.
One of the earliest known references to Jerangle was in Gazette number 45, dated April 6, 1850. In the Gazette a John Cutmore is listed as claiming the "Gerangle" run of 17,920 acres and a grazing capacity of 4000 sheep. From there development continued, with the site where the village now stands providing a focal point for people on properties in the area.
While the present village is not large, there are signs of it being more prosperous in years gone past. Buildings of significance are the Jerangle Public School which celebrated its centenary in 1992. Also contained within the village are the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church.
Jerangle Public school has a fairly comprehensive history page on Jerangle. Visit:

GTA Visit to the Jerangle Hotel, Jerangle - Easter 2012
Date: 8 April 2012
Location: Jerangle, NSW
Crew: Savo, Tanya, Josh, Gabriella, Zane, Chantelle and Isabella.
Weather: Fine, calm and clear.
Our visit to the abandoned Jerangle Hotel was a full on family affair with everyone coming out to explore the area. The drive to Jerangle is on a dirt road, but is easily accessible to any kind of car. The old hotel itself from the outside looks more like a homestead than a hotel and really is abandoned and becoming unsafe as it deteriorates to the elements.
But man, what a place to explore. Many interconnecting rooms, old furniture and plenty of energy about it; and energy that would soon take an affect on some of us!
Our plan was to see the hotel during the day, take photos, B roll footage and of course let the younger kids "ghost Hunt" with us in the safety of the day.
But the GTA crew weren't the only ones there.
Oh, we were all alone, physically. Spiritually was another problem all together.
I'd first seen the Jerangle Hotel on the Internet in an old webpage about abandoned places around Australia; houses, farms, hotels, etc. Being so close to Captain's Flat, I HAD to see this old town, especially the hotel.
So we pulled up and all got out. The kids ran off to the hotel and began exploring. I did my usual 'fluff around' outside getting my equipment ready and started shooting still and video shots of the Hotel. I walked under the large and very old pine tree outside the hotel and for reasons I can't explain, I had a burning sensation around my neck and felt very uneasy. I kept walking to the front of the hotel and those feelings soon passed.
I know in rural Australia there are stories, rumours and reports of local indigenous people and criminals who would be tormented, even hung from trees at public places, but did this ever happen in Jerangle? Were there any murders in or near this Hotel that haven't been reported? I don't know, but I am looking into it!
So I made my way through a side door to the Hotel; closest to the road. The whole hotel is a series of rooms, mostly interconnecting, with a spattering of the old and original furniture throughout. Most of the windows and doors are broken or missing, so the birds, sheep and wildlife can get in and out unrestricted.
Then, as I was walking about taking photos and shooting the B roll footage, Josh suddenly started feeling very sick. So sick that he had to leave the building and it took him hours to get over the illness. We had all eaten the same food, all been to the same places, but he was suddenly and inexplicably sick and couldn't stay inside any longer.
A few minutes later, Tanya, who is always sensitive to spirits around her started to get really uncomfortable and said "nope, that's it. Someone here doesn't want us around. I'm going outside." And she went out and Joined Josh out the back of the hotel near the orchard.
I followed Tanya outside and she told me that there was definitely something or someone in the hotel who didn't want her around. Once she was outside, she still felt edgy but was a lot calmer; but Josh was still quite unwell.
Curious as always, I made my way back inside the hotel along with Gabriella, Zane and Dylan. We all wandered about filming, photographing and getting a feel for the building.
It was our intention to come back after dinner that night and do the ghost hunt.
But the mood of everyone began to change. Tanya was edgy, Josh was still quite sick and I began to feel really angry. The younger kids seemed fairly normal and unchanged but that's because they'd moved outside.
After an hour or so we decided to make our way out of the hotel and back in the car. That afternoon everyone was cranky and none of us wanted to return back to the hotel that night. So we didn't. Instead, we all stopped talking to each other, and if we were talking we were quite aggressive.
Annoyed, tired and sick, we drove back to Sydney and all the way home I felt as though there was another person with me, a person that had me getting angrier and angrier.
What happened in that hotel that changed us all from happy and super keen to so angry and completely disinterested?
The following day, after very little sleep I connected up my video and stills camera to the computer and transferred the video and photos. No problems, did a quick check over them all and then transferred the files off the main hard drive to my external hard drive; a practice I've done for years. I left a couple of photos on the main drive for the Facebook page but everything else was moved.
Josh was no longer sick, Tanya was back to normal, but I was still really angry and short tempered. I felt nausea and as though there was some thing or some one making me feel this way.
A couple of days later, still feeling out of sorts, I went back to the computer to start reviewing the footage. The computer started up and as I opened up the external hard drive, the drive started to fail. The external disk drive died and I could not access a single thing!
Ok, so this got me upset, but the feelings I had carried with me from Jerangle; were gone. And since that day, that presence seems to have left.
Coincidence, or did a spirit in Jerangle make itself known to all of us from GTA and then came home with me? Let's review the events:
1. Burning neck and uneasy under the big old pine tree.
2. Josh becoming nauseous and quite unwell after entering the hotel.
3. Tanya feeling a presence of a person that had her wanting to leave.
4. The mood of the adults changing from happy to very edgy, angry and uncomfortable.
5. Myself having the feeling of anger, when I am always happy on ghost hunts as I love doing them.
6. Not a single member of the GTA crew wanting to go back to the hotel that night, despite the love of what we do.
7. Continuing feelings of anger and uneasiness for days after the visit.
8. The hard drive and all files being inaccessible (a similar thing happened to the "Today FM" "Kyle and Jacki O show" when they visited and stayed over night in Monte Cristo).
So there it was. Everyone (including me) back to normal, all our files inaccessible and the Jerangle Hotel not properly investigated. Even sitting here today typing out this account I feel a sickly feeling in my stomach.
Did we all feel the presence of an angry spirit, or were there just a lot of coincidences that day and the days following? If there was a spirit there, did it follow me home to make sure that none of my footage was seen? I don't know, but I'll let you all draw your own conclusions.
With all the footage most likely gone, GTA will most certainly again make the trek to Jerangle and once again face this angry old hotel. Hopefully, armed with some knowledge now, we can go back and actually complete this investigation!
