GTA Picton - Episode I
The Redbank Range Railway Tunnel - Picton NSW
A ghostly apparition shows itself
Commonly known as the “Mushroom Tunnel”, the Redbank Range Railway Tunnel was opened in February 1867 and was the first railway tunnel to be used by the NSW Railways. It was eventually closed to rail in 1919 when a new deviation line opened.
During World War II it was one of a number of disused railway tunnels used to store ammunition and other military supplies including mustard gas.
The 592ft long tunnel was also used for commercial mushroom growing after 1950 when the RAAF moved out.
The tunnel is closed on weekends and public holiday and is now only open to public access between 10 and and 2pm Monday to Friday.
GTA first Visit to the Redbank Range Railway Tunnel
Date: 29 June 2012
Location: Picton, NSW
Crew: Savo, Dylan and Zane.
Weather: Fine, calm and clear.
After clarifying access with a lovely lady at the Wollondilly Shire Council Information centre, Dylan, Zane and I made our way up to the tunnel. Locals call it the mushroom tunnel as it was last used as a commercial mushroom growing facility before it closed. The day was cool and the weather fine as we made our 11am visit to the site. Getting out of the car, the first thing we noticed was a tunnel arch and a lot of graffiti both on the tunnel and on the barrier stopping vehicular access to the site.
Handing the video camera to Dylan, he and Zane began recording and made their way inside. It was only within a few minutes that both Dylan and Zane heard something, like someone talking or crying. Analysis of the video revealed that the boys did in fact hear a disembodied voice singing!
As we ventured further into the tunnel, it all goes quiet, until a shadow passes by me and gives me a major fright!
From here, there is an orb that's captured in a photograph taken at the same time that Dylan feels something grabbing his hamstring, and Zane feels goosebumps as though a spirit was affecting him.
While still in the centre of the tunnel, we record on audio someone saying "hey" and a few unusual EMF spikes.
The tunnel has proven to be a haunted place, with feelings, photos and audio recordings all collected in a short, mid day visit!

GTA second Visit to the Redbank Range Railway Tunnel
Date: 28 August 2012
Location: Picton, NSW
Crew: Savo and Kay.
Weather: Fine, calm and clear.
With some time to spare, and Kay interested in seeing the Picton Tunnel, Kay and I ventured out just after midday to explore the possibility that Kay has the ability to see spirits. Sure enough, this trip proved to be more action packed than Kay was prepared for!
Upon arrival and the first walk through, Kay didn't feel or see anything; or did she? Kay spotted a shadowy figure moving in front of her as we passed the mid point of the tunnel; but she didn't say anything to me until we exited the southern end of the tunnel. She said that she didn't want to say anything, but she thought that the shadow appeared in front of her, and then it moved down by her left side while she was looking at it.
So, with this piece of information, Kay (reluctantly) and I (keenly) made our way back inside the tunnel from the southern end.
It wasn't more than a few minutes when Kay saw something the frightened the heck out of her; a grey shadow standing right in front of me! I couldn't see it or feel it, but Kay (who is known for her ability to see ghosts) could clearly see an outline of a human figure standing there.
After lingering a bit, the entity faded away and we kept walking, only to again see this entity following us as we made our way to the centre of the tunnel where upon it again faded away.
After asking a question of Emily, then saying please, the audio on the video camera picked up a crying sound, as if moving down the tunnel crying. We then heard a very disturbing screeching sound, which, when enhanced on audio, was very strange indeed!
With the tunnel quietening down again, Kay and I left; Kay quite shaken up with her encounters!

GTA third Visit to the Redbank Range Railway Tunnel
Date: 10 September 2012
Location: Picton, NSW
Crew: Savo and Tanya.
Weather: Fine, calm and clear.
This third visit to the Redbank Range Railway Tunnel was by far the spookiest and best visit of the three.
Just like our last two visits, the photographs we started to take immediately showed us that this was going to be a very productive visit.
We arrived at the same time as a man and his son arrived, and they were very noisy, so apart from two photographs showing a green mist, Tanya and I didn't get to see, feel or capture anything at all as we walked from the Northern end to the Southern end.
Once the other visitors left, we made our way back into the tunnel from the southern end; which was now very quiet. Immediately Tanya could feel a presence as she felt heavy in her chest and at times icy cold. Our video was picking up nothing, but the photos again infrequently started to show the green mist that we first saw on our arrival.
With Tanya taking photos, and me videoing, we slowly walked inside. The green mist was showing up in many of the photos, so Tanya and I swapped cameras; Tanya walking deeper inside the tunnel while I snapped away from just inside.
With many of the photos showing nothing, I persisted until I again saw in the camera's view finder the green mist again. This time, it was manifesting itself behind and then around and on top of Tanya! On the video, Tanya captures a fast moving white light, then she hears footsteps. I snap a photo and as I do I look up and see a figure of a translucent human standing right behind Tanya! The still camera has picked this figure up as a green mist and light, and I call out to Tanya in a panic; thinking that there was another person with her in the tunnel! She runs out back to me and the light and mist are seen in every photo for a while until it again disappears.
Hearts pounding and adrenaline racing, we reviewed the photos on the still camera and you could clearly see the green mist moving around Tanya and then behind her. Tanya said that at the time she felt icy cold and heavy in her chest; it was then that I called out to her obviously seeing the dark figure standing with her.
Tanya and I immediately start to walk back into the tunnel, me snapping photos, Tanya videoing.
Then, suddenly as we get about 100 feet into the tunnel, Tanya is physically pushed from her right side (I'm walking to her left) and the camera's zoom button is pushed causing the camera to zoom to it's maximum range. Not heard at the time, but heard in analysis were the words "GO AWAY!" And Tanya starts to move out of the tunnel in a panic. We stop, swap cameras again and then after finding the camera is now playing up, follow Tanya outside - The entity still showing up in several photos that Tanya takes as we move back out the southern end.
Whilst nothing else was seen, felt or captured from this point onwards, the remainder of our visit, including the whole lot mentioned above is on YouTube - Ghosttownsaustralia .
From what the GTA crew have all felt, seen, photographed and experienced, we can definitely say that this tunnel is haunted, we believe by Emily Bollard, the lady killed here in 1916.
Remember though, the tunnel is NOT OPEN in the evenings or on weekends. It is only open between 10am and 2pm Monday to Friday and I would STRONGLY urge you to pop into the visitors centre in the centre of town to let the lady there know of your intentions to visit.
